About Me

My hometown is about the size of a monopoly board, but the game we play here has no upscale neighborhoods or high priced real estate. Our homes are the little red square houses, and there is one hotel. I don't know which marker I am, since it is so hard to choose between the hat, the iron, and the little dog.

Why do you write?

There is an element of longing in nearly everything, a yearning to know or be known, a feeling of anticipation married to dissatisfaction. That is what I feel and see, so I write about it.

Any favorite authors? Books?

My favorite author is John Updike, and I am most fond of his short stories, as I have been since the early 70's when I first read "Museums and Women". I just finished rereading "A Month Of Sundays".
Lydia Davis is another favorite. I am impressed by the way she works the short story form in so many different ways.
I read "The Grapes of Wrath" every two or three years to maintain my Leftist tendencies.
Short stories interest me more than novels. I like the challenge of a restricted form.

I'm glad you came through with me on my "Nobody but Paust reads me anymore" whine.

I'd buy you a glass of alcohol-something to toast with, if I could scrape together some scraps of scrip.

Cheers! (clink)

Interesting tidbit about Konstancja. I wrote a long story about a man who buys a Steinway and learns to play a Chopin nocturne, no. 9 in B flat major, I believe. But more research into the piece revealed this would need a longer time to master and more experience for my character than I could allow. (I love Chopin.) So I switched to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, which still worked. There is unrequited love in the piece and love realized too late. Basically I like the idea of Chopin + love. Goes well together. So, that's all to say it was so fun to read your piece. It was as ethereal as a Chopin nocturne.

Kathy Fish – Oct 23, 2010

Thanks, Grey, for the kind comment on "Wake Up."

Thank you for your very kind remarks about my story "while we sleep." I like your bio. I also have a liking for Lydia Davis stories. And I like the thimble in the Monopoly board game, though I don't sew a stitch. I live in a much bigger town, though, where properties, at least until recently, have been bought and sold with all the fever pitch capitalism can inspire.
