Kimberly Ann Southwick
About Me
Kimberly Ann Southwick is a poet, editor, copywriter, adjunct professor and general aesthete. She loves, in no specific order, soup, hip hop, sushi, art, music, books-as-objects, baking pies, the semi-colon, climbing tress, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Philadelphia Eagles, taking pictures, playing people in Scrabble who can compete with her mad skillz, good collage art and old typewriters. She is the founder and editor in chief of the literary arts journal Gigantic Sequins. She teaches American English Grammar at Rowan University. She hopes to someday land a fulltime professorship teaching classes about reading poetry, writing poetry and/or hip hop.
Why do you write?
I am a poet/artist fueled by what it means to be human.
Any favorite authors? Books?
Gun to my head top five in (kind of) no particular order: Zadie Smith's On Beauty, J.D. Salinger's Nine Stories, Mark Twain's Huck Finn, Roberto Bolano's 2666 and Vladimir Nabokov's Bend Sinister. Poets I love: Matthea Harvey, Robert Hass, T.S. Eliot, Alice Notley and e.e. cummings. I cannot live without Neil Gaiman's Sandman series and J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. I enjoy a good essay occasionally by Walter Benjamin, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Frederic Jameson and Jonathan Franzen. Poets and writers who are my peers who inspire me are, but are not limited to, Kathleen Rooney, James Yeh, Tao Lin, shoney lamar, Ian Carlos Crawford, Justin Taylor and Theadora Siranian.
