About Me

Live in Sweden. Shovel snow in the winter, pull up weeds in the summer. My bookshelves overfloweth.

Why do you write?

What fuels creativity? I've written on demand all my life, a deadline always fuels. Otherwise a random word, a chance thought.

Why do I write? It's an addiction.

Any favorite authors? Books?

Just added Deborah Eisenberg to my list of favorite authors. Forgot to mention Marguerite Duras.

Also in no particular order (short stories and flash): William Trevor, Eudora Welty, Sherman Alexie, Angela Carter, Muriel Spark, Doris Lessing, Margaret Atwood, Stuart Dybeck, Jennifer Egan, Elizabeth Bowen, Katherine Mansfield, Katherine Anne Porter, Edna O'Brien.

Carson McCullers, Flannery O'Conner, Shirley Jackson, William Gass, Alice Munro, Charles Baxter, John Cheever, John Updike, Tobias Wolff, Russell Edson, Paul Theroux,Augusto Monterroso, Francine Prose--have to stop sometime, so I'll stop now.

How could I have ´neglected to mention Henry Green and Gina Berriault?

Paul Hargreaves – Jan 23, 2013

Hi Janice,
Sorry I haven't responded sooner. I was away on vacation and not really checking in. Thanks for getting back to me. In what capacity did you work in the biz?

Steve Finan – Jan 22, 2013

Thanks for the great comment Janice.
And thanks also for the observation on the double genitive. I greatly enjoy grammar discussions (a necessity in my profession) and it is rare to find someone who will engage in such. I agree, my double genitive is wrong — indeed, it is wrong on two counts! I will amend it.
It should be: builders’ merchant.
Much appreciated and thanks again for the comment. My respects.

Janice, I did the same thing moments ago, praising "Gloria" for the poem about the Holocaust posted by Sally. We both must be feeling verklempt today. ;-)
