Thank you. I will take "thrums." I would put thrums on the old headstone, if I could afford one or, come to think, wanted one. I'll tape it on the dashbard of my psyche.
Dang bro! Where are your stories? You're one of my favorite writers on here. I dropped in to read some stuff. I'm bummed. I guess I'll look on your website.
Great to see you on here. I'm brand new, just got the invitation two days ago, so I'm still figuring this thing out. Looking forward to reading your book when it comes out. Still waiting on word as to whether my collection is going to get picked up or not. We'll see. Enjoy your holiday bub.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read "That'd Kill Ol' Bob" and for the encouraging comment and valuable feedback! It means a lot to me and I am very grateful and appreciative!
I am looking forward to reading your work! I'll "be in touch"!
Sheldon, that's a very good suggestion, one that'll make this a stronger story...and let's be honest, it's kind of a gimmick to begin with. Thanks for the read/comment. fos.
Sheldon, DANG! Thank you so much for your oh so generous comments on my tribute to Flannery!!! And for taking the time to read it!! I look forward to seeing another Sheldon story posted! You rock!!
Thank you for your generous remarks on what I wanted in 1968 and for your suggestion. I'm sorry this is so belated but it is no less felt. I hope you are well.
Hey, thank you so much for your comment on my piece "my little tangerine"- it's really great to hear that, and I wouldn't mind if you went in depth - I'm here for the critiques to better my works. Oh and thank you commenting on my page when I first joined!
Thanks, Sheldon, for your nice words on "Nothing Good..." - I can't take credit for the first line, though, since it's Martha Williams' Nanoism story :)!
Both Marcus and Sheldon are to me the prime examples of the best and finest new writing taking place in the world today. Original, creative, willing to chance everything to make it sing for you. Whenever I'm lucky enough to read a new piece by either writer I'm immediately struck by how wonderful a thing writing can be and obviously is. They are both capable of turning a new found phrase on its head and emptying out old notions to find the perfectly edible nut in the moment and sharing it. It's discovery and invention and courage these fellows trade in, and that makes all of us as readers of literature very lucky indeed. dp
In my pantheon sit Harry Crews and Townes, among a few others. I can't believe you mention them both here on your profile. When I read Harry's "Blood and Grits," my hunch about short story writing was sealed. I knew it was the form for me. I mentioned on Sam Rasnake's poem "Wanderings" that I once met Townes, and I wanted to also say that his death felt more personal than the deaths of some people in my own family. Definitely, keep writing.
Just wanted to thank you again for taking A,B,C for your incredible site, A-Minor. I posted the story here two days ago, and am already getting awesome comments. Hopefully for those who have not found your site, they will check it out. Also, wanted to say, as always, I'm impressed with your writing. Keep up the great work!
Sheldon, thank you so much for rooting around in my earlier stuff and reading When a Bowl Hits a Tree. Your generous comment means a lot. I do wish I'd hurdle that bar a bit more, but... limbo's fun, too. I keep writing anyway. Peace...
Sheldon, I admire your work so much, I think you take huge risks, therefore I'm always thrilled to get a comment from you. thanks for reading "fragments" and for what you said
Susan
Sheldon, everyone writes for his ideal reader, who both sees his words and sees beyond them. I'm lucky to have had a few, and I think I just found another one.
Way slow from jump, Sheldon, but thanks so much on both counts.
I thought your comments on "La vie economique..." we're remarkable, a great read in their own right and really did make me think differently about what I'd written, as if I'd somewhat incidentally spawned a poem from the story I thought I was writing. I'm glad that those few words could capture a feeling that I think is perhaps a taste or scent of that quite wonderful city,
At least I'm the king of something, right? Anyway i meant every word of it. ... I look forward to you reading one of my stories. I have new ones coming out in Narrative and Tampa Review that are a 1,000 times better however. It amazes me anyone ever published them. I wish i could post the new ones now...
Sheldon! Thanks so much for finding your way to Pi in the Sky and for that lovely comment. I just wandered here after a hellish week, and now I see your story on the front page -- going there now, happily!!
Cheers for the comment on 'Love,' Sheldon. I work with repetition quite a lot, but rarely with one phrase repeating throughout. It's good to get feedback from people that it works for them.
Sheldon, Bless you, my friend. Thank you not only for the nice things that you said my story "A Time for Peace," but for driving another nail in the coffin of that old saw, "Show Don't Tell." I try to show that that's a crock as often as I can!
Sheldon! You are like a bunny, I find you at kill author! at Right Hand Pointing! here! there! every where! Anyways, enjoying your words, really liked Playing. Great stuff. peace...
Sheldon, thanks for commenting on "Taking Off the Knives." I agree with you about specificity. Without detail, what would we see? With only detail, nothing can be seen.
Sheldon, thank you for the comment on "Flirting With Immortality." I really appreciate the insight you put into my work. I might bring Vince back for another story now.
Thank you for your comment on my piece Daddy, can I have a puppy? My father was happy and my brother laughed out loud when he read the part about the sliver spotted dog. Apparently that sort of behavior characterizes my dad for him.
Sheldon,
Thank you for finding, faving, and commenting on Things I Should Have Done #1. I so appreciate it!
Things I Should Have Done #2 through #5 are up on fictionaut as well. It is an ongoing series of mine. If you have the time, and are so inclined, I'd love your feedback on them.
It's really lovely when someone finds a work that has been up for a while and comments on it.
Sheldon, thanks so much for your kick-ass comment on Matrimony. You're such a micro genius, so to hear that my first stab at twit-fic worked for you makes me so happy.
Thanks for reading the three "Drug" stories, Sheldon. Your comment about III and the opening sentence reinforces my own thinking about the character's voice, and I needed that, thanks again.
After you got your MFA, besides being the founding editor of Wrong Tree Review, what line of work are you in? Are you a writer full time, teacher?
I ask because I was recently accepted to Fairfield Universities MFA Program. After I earn it, I want to continue with a PhD and teach college. I might even start my own literary magazine, but I doubt that will make me the big bucks, at least in the beginning.
Anyway, what's your insights to all of this?
Funny thing, too: I was looking into Spalding and Warren Wilson and on the day I was going to submit my applications, I received the acceptance from Fairfield. Pretty crazy, but it saved me application fees.
I'm still trying to figure out where to put thank-yous, but I believe one should go here -- so thank you for your comments on "Waiting for a Terrorist," they meant a lot.
Thanks for reading "The Other Side," and for your comments. Yes, there is much more to tell, a novel length perhaps. But based on your comments about "November Moon," I'm thinking up a good vampire novel. I think "November Moon" would fit in nicely as a Prologue and Chapter One begins the origin of John. Now I just need to figure out who John is.
Sheldon, THANK YOU so much for checking out both versions of my workshop story. I think you and JD are right as rain. I think I might have written myself out of that particular market but I think I've written a stronger piece. Thanks so much for reading both pieces and letting me know. Your generosity is staggering. D
Hemingway? I've always thought I looked more like Sandy Duncan, but hey, who remembers her and why would any normal guy even admit such a thing? Remind me never to say things like that again. It's bad for the macho image, eh?
Sheldon - thanks for the read & comment on 'Poetipedia' What hap was late one night I was in wiki and thought I see what they had on Keats, one a my heroes (hence the play on Fanny Bryce and Well Walk), and as drifting off thought, why isn't there a place for bad writers? So next morn before anything else 'cept a cuppa joe, bam - put myself in the role and there it was.
Wow! Thanks for the high praise. I like vampire stories; I just don't know much about the history, but I suppose I can always make up something new.
What about Anne Rice? is she a good one to learn from about how to write a vampire novel. I've only read "Interview with a Vampire." I thought it was pretty good, maybe a bit long-winded. If I were to write one, it would probably be for young adults.
I'm glad Mind Games got you in! It was fun inventing a future world where people wore their cell phones - we call them mobile phones here in Australia - on their finger etc
Sheldon - thanks for the comment on Scylla - the last line was inspired by Zappa's "Help, I'm a cop" refrain followed by "Its a drag bein' a cop, I'd rather be the mayor"
HUGELY helpful comments to my workshoppy story, Shel, thanks so much. The story definitely needs some tightening/freshening. I was really happy to hear the story itself works for you. The edits I have to make will be "easier" than if you'd said the story itself is shit. All of your line edits/suggestions are spot on. I look forward to jumping all over this one tonight. David
Thanks for the comments on the story. I appreciate the encouragement; I'm relatively new to the site and not really used to an online forum for workshopping. Any suggestions you can offer would be a big help.
Yes sir, I'm an Kentucky boy...well, sort of. I've moved around so damn much, I don't rightly know. Maker's Mark runs in my blood, though. I get the jitters writing about it. Pretty scarce here in rural Philippines. I'll be posting a poem about Kentucky in the next few days, so if you get a chance, check it out.
Hello! Thanks for the enthusiastic welcome and taking the time to read "Invisible Girl." I agree -- I'm always finding great stories on Fictionaut. The phrasing and energy of "Somebody Take Care of Little Walter" was fantastic, by the way!
Thanks for the comments, Sheldon! Speaking of symmetry, I read your piece over at Divine Dirt Quarterly. It reminded me of a few Greeks. Righteous story, Sheldon.
I think it's sort of like an adaptive strategy. I gotta admit, I don't think writing on the subway's a natural thing to do, but it happens after the novelty of riding it wears off, I guess, and you can't find any other time in the day to write. Somebody posted a great article about it over at The Millions. The writing feels more urgent when you've only got three more stops 'til you're home. Kind of gets you goin'.
Thanks for the comment, Sheldon. Glad to have discovered you - "Somebody Take Care of Little Walter" is just beautiful. I look forward to reading more of your stuff!
Thanks for the fave on "Dog's Head," Sheldon. I also have a lot of interest in documentary texts and history. In a sense, what I was trying to do in this piece was "document" how memory works, how understanding something has to weave its way through a lot of experience. Anyway, thanks. I also love "Little Walter."
Sheldon, I just finished reading "Assignment" over at jmww and wanted to tell you that I thought it was outstanding. Will be checking out your other stuff soon.
Hey, thanks. Did the last paragraph of SUmmer Girl end in 4 of 5 office mates puzzling over russet potatoes as related to love? It leaves me doing that. But I DO love potatoes.
Thanks for the wall note, man. Yes, I've decided to write many more stories with real bits of history thrown in. And I'll have to check into this Eviscerator Heaven place. Sounds cool. D
Thanks for your comments on Mars, which reminded me of a blurb Dylan Thomas wrote for Flann O'Brien, (I think), in that the praise was perhaps better than the product. Thomas wrote something like, "The perfect book to give your sister...if she's a big loud girl who loves to curse and be drunk."
Immensely appreciate your review of my wife leaving story. Such moments of insight are why I read too, man, and enjoy your writing. Thanks again and great having you here. David
You did it again, sir. Your story was selected (again) for our Editor's Eye Feature. Congratulations!
http://www.fictionaut.com/blog/2012/05/08/editors-eye-frances-lefkowitz/
I am mainly following you because you mention Townes Van Zandt as the first reason you write.

Sheldon,
you have made SUCH a difference. Thanks and thanks again.
Thanks much for reading Mall Moment, and the comment.

Dear Sheldon,
Thank you so much for what you wrote about "Soliloquoy on Ma"--I appreciate it very much
Great to see you on here. I'm brand new, just got the invitation two days ago, so I'm still figuring this thing out. Looking forward to reading your book when it comes out. Still waiting on word as to whether my collection is going to get picked up or not. We'll see. Enjoy your holiday bub.

Sheldon, that's a very good suggestion, one that'll make this a stronger story...and let's be honest, it's kind of a gimmick to begin with. Thanks for the read/comment. fos.

Hi Sheldon, nice to see you on here. Can't wait to read...
you're welcome-love your stuff. been experimenting myself a lot lately, with secret (invisible) brush strokes...like your new profile pic, too. slight regression there but that can inspire creative bursts...
Hey Shel, How do i send that micro peice to a minor? is it a group?

Hey Sheldon thanks for finding Sphincter and reading it and liking it!
Yo! Do not hate my story's guts out, Sir, or I will come to your neck of the woods like Raylan and clean things up!
Thanks for taking the time to comment on Pollock's... I've been enjoying your Bent blog as well. I'm inspired and encouraged by you. Take care.

Glad to promote A-Minor. Great little mag. And thank you for liking and publishing Mama's Funeral.
Hey, thanks Sheldon for reading Border Town. I'm also looking forward to seeing my story, Grandma's Funeral up at A-Minor in a few days.
Heard that you have a book in the works. Excited for you and hope to read it when its published.
Outstanding comment on "George," Sheldon. Thank you!
It's discovery and invention and courage these fellows trade in, and that makes all of us as readers of literature very lucky indeed. dp
Sheldon I'm really happy you like "oasis" and thanks...

I'm glad that those few words could capture a feeling that I think is perhaps a taste or scent of that quite wonderful city,
Hi Sheldon. Thanks for reading 'Blues Away.' I appreciate your insightful comments.

Thanks for reading and reviewing. Glad you liked.
Thanks again Sheldon. I appreciate it!!
Sheldon, thanks for commenting on "Taking Off the Knives." I agree with you about specificity. Without detail, what would we see? With only detail, nothing can be seen.

Hey, Sheldon, don't you believe it was a true story??? Thanks for the fav and nice comments!
Sheldon, thanks so much for your kick-ass comment on Matrimony. You're such a micro genius, so to hear that my first stab at twit-fic worked for you makes me so happy.
Sheldon, thanks for your close read of Identical. Yes, the spaced "you" was intentional, to make a pause there and reinforce the overall metaphor
Re BBCL, I liked that line too. Thanks, Sheldon, glad to get the grey matter firing!
Thank you for the kind words on The Secrets of the Dead. I'm touched that you read a few of the lines a second time and once to a friend.
Mr. Bell just slipped me a note to pass along: “Sheldon, you’re the best for reading and commenting on my ‘The Common Cold’ story. Muchas gracias!”
Thanks for reading the three "Drug" stories, Sheldon. Your comment about III and the opening sentence reinforces my own thinking about the character's voice, and I needed that, thanks again.

Sheldon, thank you so much for your kind words on 'All's Well'. I've just been admiring your blog - great.
Thanks for reading Humility and the suggestions. I'll get right on it.
I'm still trying to figure out where to put thank-yous, but I believe one should go here -- so thank you for your comments on "Waiting for a Terrorist," they meant a lot.
You're so right about Hemingway. The shorts rule.
Also, I am thrilled to be able to spread the phrase "utter fucker".
Thanks so much for your comment on Carmencita and the Virgin. "Ondaatje good"? Heavens.
Thanks for reading "The Other Side," and for your comments. Yes, there is much more to tell, a novel length perhaps.
Your comments really make my day. thank you.
Hey Sheldon, thanks for the read - Eight States Away - and thanks for commenting, too. foster.
Thanks so much, Sheldon, for your comments and fav on "Eddie Says"!
thanks for the kind words! glad you liked my little story :)
You're welcome, Sheldon, and thank you for the kind comments and insights. I'm glad you liked "Senior Center."
My god Sheldon your little Walter is going through the roof-- Congrats!!!
Oh, my. That's one county over! I'll be down in June for the family reunion. We're shooting for no firearm injuries this year, pardon the pun.
Sheldon, where in Kentucky? My people are from Harlan County. I went there during the summers as a kid.
Thanks very much for your kind "Read Chinese" comments.
Best,
RR
Hello! Thanks for the enthusiastic welcome and taking the time to read "Invisible Girl." I agree -- I'm always finding great stories on Fictionaut. The phrasing and energy of "Somebody Take Care of Little Walter" was fantastic, by the way!
Thanks for the kind words about "White girl/boy angst." Here's hoping Little Walter gets to upgrade to Belvedere or Grey Goose some day...
Thanks for the comments, Sheldon! Speaking of symmetry, I read your piece over at Divine Dirt Quarterly. It reminded me of a few Greeks. Righteous story, Sheldon.
Hi Sheldon, I'm late thanking you, but thanks for reading and commenting on my story, A Dream Life. I really appreciate the time. foster.
Re your Little Walter story-- the title is perfect for the piece, so vulnerable...
Thank you for the kind words about my story! I'm glad you laughed.
Thanks for the glowing words, Sheldon! My minnows are shining and shimmering!
Thank you for the welcome!
Thanks for the kind comments on "Maps"!
Thanks for the comment, Sheldon. Glad to have discovered you - "Somebody Take Care of Little Walter" is just beautiful. I look forward to reading more of your stuff!
Thanks, Sheldon, for the pleasant words. It's all "just pour rire" as the French have it, and I'm really glad to hear it's having the desired effect.
thanx for the read and comment Sheldon!
Sheldon—thanks so much for the read. I'm delighted you liked my story.
Thanks Sheldon for your kind words -- much appreciated. Welcoming place here. Peace...
Thanks, Sheldon!
What a wonderful compliment you paid on my piece, Their Next. Thank you for your kind words.
Shel, thanks for checking out "From Scratch." Really appreciate you letting me know it works.
Congrats on the killer piece in Monkeybicycle. So good.
Sheldon, I just finished reading "Assignment" over at jmww and wanted to tell you that I thought it was outstanding. Will be checking out your other stuff soon.
Sheldon, Thanks so much for you comments on "Quitting." I really appreciate it. I see you're from Kentucky. Do you know my friend Ed McClanahan?
Really enjoying your work here. Where are you in KY?
Thank you for doing my prompt. Man, that story "Johnny's Blue Mosrite Guitar" is terrific! Amazing use of the prompt.
Just got my Wrong Tree Review in the mail. Wonderful cover and stories. Should finish it up tonight. Kudos.
Sheldon, Good suggestion on my Twin Towers poem. I made the change. Thanks!
Nice PANK interview man.
I like Salter as well.
Thanks Sheldon. I just sent your review something a few weeks ago.
Hello darlin' ...here I sit, at the table. i'm excited.
Thanks for the words of encouragement!
Hi Sheldon, thank you for your helpful comments on my story.
Hey man,
I had no idea this was such a thriving spot!
Hey, thanks. Did the last paragraph of SUmmer Girl end in 4 of 5 office mates puzzling over russet potatoes as related to love? It leaves me doing that. But I DO love potatoes.
Glad you liked Cow Juice!!!
great to have you on board! post something this week...let's get the place hoppin'
Thanks for the feedback. Perhaps adding the "cheese" was too much, too many dairy products.
NP. Thanks also for your comments!
Welcome to F'naut, Sheldon. Thanks for the comment and fave on my story, too.
Thanks for the comments on my story. Really appreciate it. Looking forward to reading your stuff.
Thanks for the words, Sheldon.
hi, sheldon!
Hey, Sheldon,
Thanks for the comments on my story, man. I really appreciate it. Glad to see you on here.
Thanks for your nice and bolstering words about "Suzanne", a piece that worries me.
Immensely appreciate your review of my wife leaving story. Such moments of insight are why I read too, man, and enjoy your writing. Thanks again and great having you here. David
Welcome!
fantastic to see you on here. enjoy!
