About Me

I have written short fiction since 2003. I have been lucky enough to be published fairly widely, and to have success in literary competitions. My debut collection of short fiction - Words from a Glass Bubble - came out in early 2008 from Salt Publishing. It will be followed in 2009 by a collection of flash and micro fiction.

I founded the online writing community The Fiction Workhouse. I co-edit Cadenza Magazine, a small press literary short story and poetry magazine based in the UK.

I teach Creative Writing to adults and to school children. I used to run writing sessions as part of the treatment programme in a rehabilitation centre where I was moved by the honesty and rawness of the writing. I subsequently founded Tom's Voice Magazine, an online place for writing from those whose lives have been touched by addiction.

I am writing a novel. I am learning to write poetry. I am represented by Euan Thorneycroft at A M Heath & co. London.

Why do you write?

Life. I write because it pains me not to.

Any favorite authors? Books?

Jim Crace. J M Coatzee. Raymond Carver. Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Dylan Thomas. Billy Collins. Seamus heaney. Alice Munro. Jhumpa Lahiri. Margaret Attwood. Clare Wigfall. Haruki Murakami.

Anything by the above.
