  • About Me

I grew up in an industrial pocket of Nutley, a middling New Jersey suburb next door to down dirty Newark. Most of my friends and family were hard workers, veterans. Others were bikers, cops, boxing promoters, jailbirds, soldiers, builders, boozers, bartenders, truckers, musicians, hairdressers and hash-slingers. They told the best stories, and I try to honor them in my own.

I train in mixed martial arts and strongman training in my spare time.

    Why do you write?

I write unflinching fiction with heart. Dennis Lehane said the social novel is now in the genre of crime fiction, and I agree. What I write is often categorized as noir, crime fiction, or urban fiction. I write about the kinds of people I know from the industrial neighborhoods of New Jersey eking their way into suburbia.

I also write humor, mostly satire, fueled by the absurdity of intelligent monkeys trying to run a planet.

    Any favorite authors? Books?

Andrew Vachss: Down in the Zero; Shella
Tana French: Faithful Place; In the Woods
    Sam Lipsyte: The Ask
John Kennedy Toole: A Confederacy of Dunces
Harper Lee: To Kill a Mockingbird
    James Joyce: Ulysses; Dubliners
Lawrence Block: All the Flowers Are Dying; When the Sacred Ginmill Closes
    Chuck Bukowski: Pulp
JRR Tolkien: The Lord of the Rings
    Peter Beagle: The Last Unicorn
Jonathan Lethem: Gun, With Occasional Music; Motherless Brooklyn
    Christopher Moore: Lamb

Right now? Michael Chabon: The Yiddish Policeman's Union

    Dear Tom,
Thank you for sharing your rejection letter about your penis with us here. At this time, we do not reject rejection letters... however, sorry to say, we also do not publish them.

I am afraid that puts you in limbo. Please be aware the 99% of the penises who share their rejection stories with us are also in limbo.

I hope your atoms are well. You seem to have very nice ones.

    yours, the editor.

The thanks go to you for posting the challenge and inspiring me to write Lettie in the Ozarks, which is actually part of something longer, a kind of reworking of The Grapes of Wrath from the pov of young children--though I realize it is a rather outrageous project! Grapes and Winter's Bone are two of my all-time favorite books.
