Carol, your comments on New World are much appreciated! I am giving some serious thought as to how to flesh out the ideas more. I really appreciate your read and your thoughts. And I’ll be back here in another day or so to read your story (stories?) soon! Just now sitting in airport, low on batteries, just enough to say hello to you and thank you for your read…
Carol, you may be partially right with the language of “Woolgathering”, but that was the tone I was trying to set with the whole piece — sort of a overwrought, overdone, overworded sort of voice, like it was written in the time period. I think what’s getting me is the fact that it transitions straight back to the very beginning of the narrator’s life, which is to say before she was born. That’s where it gets tricky. It just never flowed correctly, and I must have scrapped all of it a hundred times or so. I know exactly what I want to do with this story, and it’s just not working. It’s so frustrating.
Thanks, Carol. You make a good comment about my tale of woe “Camp 7.” I didn’t think of that. Yes, I could have used a little help from my friend—and his mom.
Carol, Thanks for the kudos for “Star of David.” Yes, 1960 seemed ages away from 1945 to me, too—but not to my Dutch friends. I was told that the vacant lots that were all over the city were left empty deliberately, as reminders, in spite of the pressing need for housing.
Dear Carol,
Just on one of those days when I’m wondering if I can write my way out of a paper bag along comes you with a comment like yours on “See?” It put me back to work with a smile: thanks so much.
Thanks for the welcome, Carole. Hope some day soon my fiction collection The Meaning of Children will be published and find its way for you to review. Look forward to reading your work.
Thanks for reading November Moon. I agree, lots of possibilities. I just don’t know much about vampire history, so don’t know what to write. I guess I can always make up new stuff. For instance, did you notice that John can be out in the sun?
Many thanks, Carol, for your kind words for “The Secret Animal.” I’m glad you enjoyed being “immersed” in that world—I was hoping it would have a little bit of otherworldly magic.
Thank you for your comment on “Boiling the Dog’s Head.” I wrote a response to your comment there that I probably should have put here—it’s about my experience using this essay in a class I taught. Anyway. Thanks again!
Carol, as always, your insights are appreciated. Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll be mulling them over—and probably following quite a few of them—as I rework in the next week or so.
Carol! Thanks so much for suggesting the title “How a Dumbwaiter Works.” I think that’s about 20x better than “Late Bloomers.” I partly owe its acceptance to you fo that suggestion and a few other comments that helped me during edits. Indeed, it was great news here in the DC area amidst all the thunder and rain. D
CAROL! I love the title “How a Dumbwaiter Works.” Have I thanked you for all the wonderful reviews/critiques/insight you continually provide in the workshop group? You’re an amazing editor. Really appreciate your take on the story and insightful comments. Thanks again, David

Thanks so much for your comments on “Composite.” You are so right. I need to start with the 3rd para…and hit up Paul’s problems in more depth. Your edits are invaluable. In terms of the workshoppy group, I need to take some cues from you. Will read your posted story today. Thanks again, Carol. D
not kind! DB blew me away and helped me get away from an emotionally nasty place…i only meant to lurk in the middle of something else and found myself completely involved…such humanity here.
You’re very welcome, Carol. I find it really helpful to have someone else read because they’ll always spot something that the writer just keeps reading over because in his head he knows what he means.
Hi Carol! No Howdy’s either! Unless I’m smashed! Good to see you here. I don’t participate a lot but it’s fun to post stories. I really need to read more here!
